What the Heck is That!?: Five Strange Plants

These are five of some of the weirdest plants you’ll ever see. Have you ever heard of a plant that smells like vanilla? What about one that has flowers that are three feet across? Well get ready.

Most people have seen daisies and pansies in people’s gardens, but what about these plants?

1. Rafflesia

This is the biggest single flower in the world. It can have a diameter of up to three feet. It is also a parasite. Its victim is one of the species of the tetrastigma. It first appears as a fungus-like tissue on the vine. Then it begins to grow into a bud that looks like a black cabbage. Finally it opens up and becomes a flower.

2. Corpse Flower

The corpse flower has a questionable size, smell, and Latin name. Its common name is the corpse flower because is smells like a dead body. The only place it grows is in the forests of Sumatra, but they are grown in some botanical gardens. When it dies it grows a single leaf, and then the leaf stems into many, many leaves. These structures can reach up to twenty feet tall.

3. Azara microphylla

This small tree is native to Chile and smells like vanilla!

4.Dragon Arum

This flower is similar to the corpse flower, well at least the smell is. It can be found near the Mediterranean Sea, or even in your garden. Rather than being pollinated by bees and butterflies it is pollinated by flies. They are attracted to the scent, then they trapped inside the flower overnight, and they come out covered in pollen.

5. Tacca Chantrieri

This beautiful plant also called the bat flower can grow up to 2 feet tall and grow whiskers one foot long!

I would really appreciate authors including the botanical names of plants, and perhaps families. Common names are just too……COMMON.
    Thanks
