What Do You Mean by Hybrid Plants?

By hybrid we mean a cross-bread of a plant or animal. The union of one species with the female of another species. This happens through nature or deliberately by man.

Plant breeding was known just not in modern times but also in the early days of the Egyptians and Assyrians.

Plant hybridization consists in producing new types of offspring by artificial pollination brought about between the flowers of two different species or varieties. This process called hybridization or crossing can help to produce offspring which have the desired characteristics of both the parents.

Thus through extensive research in this field, improved strains of rice, wheat, sugarcane, tomato, pulses, roses, lilies etc. have been evolved. These superior hybrid plants combine in them higher yield better quality and resistance to pests and diseases.

The economic importances of hybrid plants are manifold and unlimited. Great achievements have been made in the hybridization of agricultural an industrial crops.

The method of hybridization is very simple. The stamens of a flower are removed before its anthers mature, and the flower then with the gynoecium intact covered with a paper or muslin bag to prevent natural pollination. When the stigma of this flower matures, pollen from another offspring resulting from this cross is the hybrid plant.
