What are Plant Parasites?

Plant that grow on other living plant and absorb food materials form them are called parasites. Some are total parasites and others are partial parasites.

Total parasites are not green in color and they cannot produce their own food. For this purpose they twine around a host plant and absorb as much food as possible. Examples are the dodder plant, the rafflesia and the sapria.

Partial parasites are green in color and can manufacture little food. They can depend entirely on the host plant. An example is the mistletoe.

Parasites are of different kinds depending on the part of the host plant they grow. Some parasites grow on the stem or branches and are therefore called stem parasites.

The dodder plant and mistletoe are both stem parasites. Other parasites grow on the root are called root parasites like the broomrape and the rafflesia.

To absorb food, the parasite plant produces certain special roots called sucking roots or haustoria which penetrate into the host plant, secrete necessary digestive agent and absorb the soluble food products.
