What Are Moss Plants?

Moss plants are small plants and belong to the higher cryptogam family. They do not bear flowers and seeds. Moss plants are generally 2-3 cm. only.

Sometimes tough, they grow much more in height. They grow in clusters form buds. They form a green soft carpet on damp ground, moist walls of buildings and wells.

The moss plant is simple. It consists of a short stem. Its tiny leaves are spirally arranged round the stem which his fixed to the ground by rhizoids.

Like the fern, the moss has as alternation of two generations one sexual, the other asexual. The gametophyte produces sex organs at its stem tip.

The male cells swim on the water on the plant to the female the male cells swim on the water on the plant to the female cells and fertilize them.

The female cell bears a sporophyte which is an asexual plant which is not green and has to depend on the gametophyte for its food.

The capsule containing the spores ripen and burst releasing the spores. These germinate to produce a green structure called the protonema from which grows the new leafy plant. Mosses also multiply by negative means. Some of the mosses are the white fork moss and the common hair moss.
