The World’s Tallest Flower

One of the world’s tallest flowers bloomed today (5/1/2012) in Niagara Falls Ontario Canada. Nearly 100 inches tall, this plant is not a Mother’s Day prize.
Its scientific name is The Amorphophallus titanium (Titan Arum for short). These flowers are very rare with about 22 in known existence.
They can grow an amazing 3 inches a day.
When it blooms, the bloom lasts for about 4 days, so how does this strange flower get pollinated? Well, it smells really bad, it smells like rotten meat to attract insects for pollination.
The Titan Arum is also know as the corpse flower because of the horrible smell associated with it.

I remember this from a Richard Attenborough programme where they actually got a camera inside one. It has a valve that locks the flies in overnight to ensure pollination before releasing them again. I can’t remember where he was, but I’m pretty sure it was no where near Niagara Falls, so I don’t know how one got there.

Raflesia which is the biggest flower is found here in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.
