Broad-Leaved Cattail

Broad Leaved Cattail information.

The bload-leaved cattail is a pretty large sized plant found in marshes, lakeshores, river backwaters and roadside ditches in which it habits. It grows in moist soil and water up to a meter in depth. The plant is found all over the world. It is around 20-33mm wide and 1m and over tall. The leaves are sheathed around each other at the base of the plant.

The plant has spread very widely and rules many wetlands through its enormous speed of growth. One seed can produce a network of rhizomes and they can lead into a lot of more flowers. The flowers can be found from very poor places too in which they are dried and used to make furniture and other useful items.

You could say that the plant looks a bit like a hotdog on a stick because of its unusual appearance. Each of the flowers in the plants has got very broad stigmas and many white hairs. The female flower is below the male one and the male flower is directly on top of the female one. The plant is often confused with the narrow-leaved cattail because of the pretty minor differences they have.

The bload-leaved cattail also adapts quite a bit according to the time of the year and the type of weather. It returns back in spring from the produced sprouts on the rhizomes. As the female flowers mature, the sheathe surrounding them drops and the spike in the plant turns brown. After the pollen is released from the plant, the male flowers drop off the stalk of the flower. The nutlets in the flower also produce small hairs that allow them to be carried away by the wind.

The bload-leaved cattail also has a decent value in the aquatic community. The shoots and rhizomes provide shelter and spawning habitat for the fish. Caterpillars also feed on the flower and use it to create shelters for winter protection. It is thereby important for these little creatures.
