Biology One Review

This is a review of Biological terms and knowledge necessary to succeed in biology.

-       Are in multicellular organisms

-       More complex

-       Usually have one primary function

9)    Identify levels of multicellular organisms.

1)    Cell- Basic unit of life

2)    Tissue- Group of the same cells that perform a specific function

3)    Organ- Group of tissues that perform a specific function

4)    Organ system- Group of organs that work together to perform a specific function

Difference between Animal Cell and Plant Cell

-       Animal cell- has no cell walls, and chloroplasts

-       Plant Cell- has no unique structure of lysosomes

Cell

Basic unit of life

Cell membrane

Thin, double-layered sheet around the cell

Cell wall

Strong layer around the cell membrane that protects the cell

Nucleus

Large structure that contains the cell’s genetic information

Cytoplasm

Portion of the cell outside the nucleus

Prokaryote

Organism whose cells do not contain a nucleus

Eukaryote

Organism whose cells contain a nucleus

Organelle

Specialized structures within a cell that perform important cell functions

Chromatin

Granular material visible within the nucleus

Cell Growth and Division

Mitosis

1)    What are the main events of the cell cycle

            Purpose: Replicate body cells

            Parent cells- Diploids

            Daughter cells- haploid

            Genetic likeness- identical

Cell division of body- somatic cells

Timing of cell cycle regulated by cyclins

G1- is the longest phase, because cell growth occurs

The importance of internal regulators is to tell the cell when to perform certain             functions such as cell division and DNA replication

External regulators respond to events outside the cell by speeding up or slowing             down the cell cycle

    Wrong. Ch3#2 Prokaryotes vs Eukaryotes
Wrong. Ch3#7 Hypotonic and Hypertonic switched

This is misleading information and I did not read the rest
