Avoid Consuming Seafood Under The Threat of Extinction
High demand for seafood leads to overfishing. These are the main causes for the decline of various fish populations in the world. What can you do about it? Everyone needs to ask themselves that question. This is just some of the confirmed species of animals to avoid if you want to help.
The Food And Agriculture Organization estimated that 80% of our world’s fish stocks are exploited beyond sustainable levels. It is time to wake up and not support the unethical and cruel methods of fishing because they are damaging our ecosystems permanently.
Tuna

Bluefin Tuna. Image from Wikipedia
Tuna(Bluefin, Yellowfin, Bigeye) Origin: Global
To satisfy the demand for the sushi market in Japan, the Tuna are severely over fished. Another big blow for the Tuna was when the 48-nation International Commission for Conservation of the Atlantic Tuna turned down the plea to reduce the the number of catch so that the species can replenish.
Sharks

Hammerhead shark. Image from Wikipedia
Sharks(Hammerhead, Blue Shark) Origin: Columbia, Costa Rica, Hawaii, New England
Shark’s fins soup is a favourite delicacy in Chinese restaurants but know that 100 million sharks are killed every year to feed the market. The shark’s fins are sliced from the shark and the carcass are thrown back into the sea. The threat is becoming serious because the shark populations in the world are in danger of collapsing.
Salmon

Image from Wikipedia
Salmon Origin: North Atlantic, Pacific Ocean, North America
The salmon populations in the world have declined by 50% in the last 20 years. The main causes are due to overfishing and disease spread by cross contamination of farmed salmons. Warmer climate have also contributed to the decline of the salmon populations.
Stingray

Red stingray. Image from Wikipedia
Stingray(Sharpnose, Red Stingray) Origin: Pacific Ocean
Another severely over fished species that are unintentionally caught by coastal bottom trawl fishing or set nets. Stingray populations have depleted enormously and are now at a critical level.
Grouper

Malabar Grouper. Image from Wikipedia
Grouper (Redmouth, Malabar) Origin: Indonesia
Apart from being over fished by small-scale commercial fishermen, the Grouper are also affected by the loss of coral reefs which is its habitat.
Crabs

Horseshoe crab. Image from Wikipedia
Crabs(Flower crab, Horseshoe crab) Origin: South East Asia and South China Sea
Unregulated fishing of the Flower crabs in the South China Sea have depleted the species to unsustainable levels. The horseshoe crab found in South East Asia are also being over exploited by the pharmaceuticals industry. The crab species is also under pressure because of the loss of habitat.
Prawns

Tiger prawn. Image from Wikipedia
Prawns/Shrimp(Tiger prawn, Mantis shrimp) Origin: Malaysia, Thailand
Tiger prawns and shrimps are being over fished in mangrove areas. 40% of mangrove areas around the world are lost because of prawn farming. Not only that the prawns may disappear, the extensive changes in the environment would also affect the ecological systems in the area.

I share your concerns but some people would assassinate you for writing this. Be careful my friend.

It’s nice you care so much about existinct seafood. Don’t worry, I’ve never had the desire to eat the seafood you mentioned. I only eat basic fish from my Church during Lent.
But, my brother in law eats all of these as he eats seafood all the time.
On December 9, 2010 at 6:59 am
Great Share – I know the Grouper in the U.S. can no longer be harvested for food, it can still be caught and released for sport though. But under the law it can not actually leave the water, when caught.

It is a hungry world out there indeed. We’ve been over fishing for years and depleting the oceans. Some restrictions need to be put in place, but then how does the world enforce those restrictions?
On December 9, 2010 at 8:17 am
Thats a good bit of information
On December 9, 2010 at 8:52 am
If good fishing practices were being followed we wouldn’t have this problem.
On December 9, 2010 at 9:20 am
here comes 2 fishes, we need to be protected.
Something interesting here, good information. Very well presented.
Just hope they don’t increase the price for seafood.
For sharkfin soup, I only drink when attending wedding dinner and they are served, if I don’t take, feel “sayang”, any balance, they may pour away, but usually no balance.

tried to vote 6 times failed, the arrow spin and spin till giddy.
On December 9, 2010 at 9:28 am
Very informative Sharif. I had no idea there were that many types of salmon.
On December 9, 2010 at 9:30 am
The prognosis is not good. I have no faith that we the people or our governments will do the right thing.
On December 9, 2010 at 9:33 am
Great info. I love wild red sockeye salmon.
On December 9, 2010 at 10:13 am
The fishing industry needs to know how to moderate their harvesting practices. Nice read. Thanks

Some groups have no ethics about what animals they kill.
On December 9, 2010 at 11:45 am
We wreck our land, air and seas, we are not doing very well at being the caretakers of our planet. Very good points made, I am glad I don’t eat any sea creatures.
On December 9, 2010 at 11:59 am
There has been a lot of talk over the years of over fishing but why does not one replenish the fish supply? Millions of dollars are wasted on senseless things. If fish hatcheries would just raise the type of fish being depleted we could repopulate the fish problem.
With Fishing being a No. 1 past time there would be money in replenishing the fish. The revenue could be pulled for the Game and Natural Resource, fishing license are not free. What happens to the money from those fees?
It is something to think about. If something is not done we will not have those fish around to eat any longer. It is just a thought.

great share! thanks!
On December 9, 2010 at 12:25 pm
I love all those kinds of seafood and I didn’t know that some of those like the tuna fish were in extinction.
On December 9, 2010 at 1:58 pm
It’s good sense, If we allow these species to repopulate we would avoid having to go without them forever.
A timely reminder that our natural resources are finite.
On December 9, 2010 at 6:45 pm
Is that true about the sharks? They just get the fins and throw the rest away? How cruel and what a waste! I mean if you kill animals for food, at least, get the most out of them so their death would not be so much in vain. Just the fins? It’s like killing chickens just to get the feathers.
You have raised such valid concerns here. I hope more will get to read this to be aware of such things. Great article Sharif!

i never seen the CRAB in real . .that kind of crab . .
On December 9, 2010 at 10:54 pm
Nice share.:)

If nothing is done concerning killing and consuming those animal species listed as vulnerable or endangered, then somehow without we knowing, the oceans will be devoid of marine creatures. A very nice article.
On December 10, 2010 at 6:31 am
Another illuminating article, Sharif. Again on this point, I totally agree, we are depleting everything this Eath has given us….
Well done, my friend!
On December 10, 2010 at 12:36 pm
Don’t eat and don’t buy products made from these animals to prevent them go extinct.
On December 10, 2010 at 12:45 pm
I really appreciate these types of articles being a person who spends much time on the ocean. Our hope is that one day soon human will “get it.”
On December 10, 2010 at 1:14 pm
More of the problem comes with the unintentional slaying of them, through types of pollutions…
But, the larger fish and sharks should be left alone ,they have a hard time reproducing quickly. And the things like Shrimp… people need to start eating a variety of sea food, in a balance.
If people never had the idea of delicacies, there really wouldn’t be as much of a problem. It’d be like people eating only apples, instead of the rest of the fruits, we’d be on a shortage of apples.
On December 10, 2010 at 3:21 pm
Gosh! I didn’t know these sea creatures were in danger. I shall have to avoid eating them in future. A very informative and well written piece.

Great! I’m on the right path being vegetarian. I support little advocacy efforts like this to save our endangered species. Bravo for this Sharif and for being on the hot content!
On December 11, 2010 at 1:43 pm
very great insights. loved it
On December 11, 2010 at 2:56 pm
I really support your message here Sharif. Will have to look into prawn farming in Australia and new Zeal;and more closely, hopefully we’re not doing this in mangrove areas.
On December 11, 2010 at 3:32 pm
Good for you! My grandfather made me aware of how badly the worlds oceans are being over-fished. He said the Florida Keys and Destin will never be the same.
On December 11, 2010 at 3:55 pm
Very good article. I have been a fishing writer for over twenty years and the over fishing problem is ever growing.
On December 11, 2010 at 6:54 pm
Very nice article. I knew that the cutthroat salmon in North America were being protected but not that there were strains upon the horseshoe crab as well.
On December 12, 2010 at 1:58 am
Good solution for extinction!
On December 12, 2010 at 10:28 am
I’m sorry to say I love most of the seafood on this list.
