16 Weird and Amazing Bird Facts Around The World

1) In Russia the keen eyesight of the pigeon is put to a very practical use for, at one factory in Moscow, they are used to sort ball-bearings. After four or five weeks special training, the birds inspect the ball-bearings as they pass on a conveyor. If any show the least blemish the pigeons peck a special plate which operates a reject sign, the faulty bearing is removed and the birds is rewarded with a few millet seeds.

2) The Russians claims the pigeons are so expert that they can even detect a fingerprint on a bearing and can inspect 4,000 an hour.

3) During the American War a Confederate General by the name of Ewell frequently had hallucinations when he believed he was a bird. During these times he would chirp like a bird and eat nothing but wheat gains.
4) Who Preached to the Birds?

Francis of Assisi probably inspires more affection than any other man or woman who is called a saint.
He was born into a wealthy family in Assisi in 1182 and as a young man fought in battles, was a prisoner of war and suffered serious illness.
Then a voice told him to ‘repair the church’ (which was in grave need of spiritual repair) and Francis turned to a life of joyful, religious devotion, absolute poverty and devoted service to the poor and sick. Men and women flocked to join him and the church authorized his new order, the Franciscans. Francis was the essence of simplicity and directness, loving God, man and nature with such fervor that he even preached at one time to a flock of birds.

I thoroughly enjoyed this article. I wonder how they keep the pigeons from just rejecting all the ball bearings in order to receive the millet seeds.
