Weird and Wonderful of Universe: Stars in The Sky

The first researchers to spot pulsars gave them the nickname LGMs (Little Green Men), because these stars emit signals so regular and precise, it is as if they were produced by an intelligent alien life-form.

Core Facts

Stars are balls of gas, composed mainly of hydrogen and helium and held together by gravity, in which nuclear fusion creates energy.

A star’s evolution depends on its mass. The larger the star, the more gravity compresses the material within it, the hotter it becomes, and the more rapidly nuclear reactions take place.

Star lifespans vary form a few million years thousands of millions of years.

When stars die, such as in supernova events, elements are recycled to form new stars and solar systems.

Stars may appear as single points of light, but many are made up to two or more stars.

Evolution of Stars

A star’s life cycle is divided into three main phases, driven by the conflict between the outward pressure of heat and energy supporting a star and the inward tug of gravity. Some stars fail to achieve nuclear fusion but still radiate some light. They are known as brown dwarves.

Thousands, even millions, of stars form together in ‘nurseries’ inside dust and gas clouds (nebulae).

They are truly wonderful. I wonder what the stars look like – close up. I don’t know their real shape.
