Two Moons?

On August 27 Mars will be as bright as the moon, creating the illusion of two moons.

Apparently, on August the 27th Mars will be so close and bright that it will give the effect of two moons. However rumors of this have been going on since 2003, so there is a lot of conspiracy as to whether or not this will actually happen. Obviously it would be really cool if it did but the evidence against  it heavily weighs out the evidence for it.

For example , the fact that the rumor has been going on since 2003 speaks for itself, probably just some crazy scientists speculating randomly about things  that aren’t in their field of expertise. Anyway back in 2003 an email circulated, saying that”Mars will look as bright and large as the moon to the naked eye”, in those words.

Truth be told Mars and Earth were very near in 2003. In fact, the closest they’ve been since approximately 55000 B.C. However, despite mars being very close, its still not close enough to appear as a second moon when you measure out the distances and sizes and brightness from a scientific point of view.

The next year this effect will truly happen will be in 2287 so its obviously a once in a lifetime opportunity. Personally, I don’t think you should waste your time sitting there waiting to see Mars on the 27th because actually, you’d need a telescope with 75x magnification to be able to see it.

It is Monday, Sept. 28 and at 9:00 Central time, I happened to look out the window. I don’t know why because it was so cold and cloudy. I saw to the southwest of my house two bright moons. The one on the west side was not as bright as the one on the east. There was also Venus near the bright moon. I quickly went to the net to look up what this means and saw this post. You mention it was expected on Aug 27, 2009…..well, I clearly saw it but now the clouds quickly covered the sky again. Mars is the planet of war and for it to be seen now tells me that war is right on the horizon.

I forgot to add that I am located in southcentral Wisconsin and sure didn’t need a telescope to see this bright event; simply amazing, now that I have read your site and what this means. Thanks!
