Stargazing and You

You will be amazed at the world that opens up right before your eyes, in your own backyard.

Grab a blanket and head to your backyard for a night of stories and stars! Stargazing!

No. It’s not the Oscars! It’s all about the night sky and myths.

Did you know there are 88 constellations?  A constellation is a group of stars that are usually identified with a mythological story or figure. On a clear, moonless night thousands of stars and many planets are visible.

A guide way to start for new stargazers is actually inside with a good sky watching chart or star chart. Your local library will have books on constellations and stargazing as well as the stories behind the constellation names.

What you see in the night sky depends on your location, time and season.  A star chart will help identify the stars in your area.  A star chart will also tell you where to look for planets that can be seen with the naked eye.

What do you need?

A blanket

Maybe a jacket if your nights are cool

The best instrument for beginners is your own eyes. Your eyes can see subtle colors, shading and the movements of planets. Try binoculars too!

A simple star chart

A flashlight with a red paper over the light to read the star chart. The red light helps protect your eyes.

The best time to try out your stargazing abilities is when the night is clear and moonless.  Try and get away from streetlights. The farther away from the lights, the more stars you will see. Give your eyes a few minutes to adjust to the dark.

Try keeping a log.  You will begin to notice the subtle and not so subtle changes in your night sky!

Have fun!
