THE STRUCTURE OF SILBURY HILL
The enormous, artificially constructed Silbury Hill, just south of Avebury, rises 130 feet into the air and has a flattened top. It consists of approximately 444,000 cubic yards of re-deposited earth. It was apparently built in three phases, the first dating to around 2660 BC. In the second phase, a chalk hill was built spiraling upward in six steps. The final phase filled in these spiraling steps with gravel and earth, giving the hill its characteristic conical form.

Some researchers think that Silbury Hill is a solar observatory, while others see it as a sculpture of the earth goddess. (Source)
THE CELTIC HARVEST FESTIVAL
Not surprisingly, there are many tales surrounding the impressive mound. According to one legend, this place is the grave of the Celtic king Sil. In other stories a knight in golden armor and a massive golden horse are buried here. Another tale says that the Devil wanted to tip a sack of earth over the city of Marlborough, but the might priest of nearby Avebury was able to make him to empty his sack here instead.
In1723, the scholar William Stukeley wrote of excavations at the top of the hill, where bones and an ancient bridle were found. Additional excavation took place in the years 1776, 1849, and 1967. No graves or any other evidence that might elucidate the purpose of the hill have ever been found. The archaeologist Richard Atkinson, using radiocarbon dating and an analysis of anciet insects found buried in the chalk, was able to date the start of construction to midsummer, sometime around 2660 BC. Midsummer is the time of the Lugnasad Festival, also known as the Celtic harvest festival, a shamanic ritual celebrating the feminine abundance of nature.

EARTH SCULPTURE OF UFO MEETING PLACE?
There are always new theories about the function of Silbury. The researcher Michael Darnes conjectured that, like Glastonbury Tor, it was a sculpture of the pregnant earth mother, Tara. Another theory interprets Silbury as a solar observatory based on the shadows it throws on the plain. Geomancers point out that Silbury sits atop the same ley line as the Neolithic West Kennet Long Barrow and Avebury obelisk. They claim that this same meridian runs through Glastonbury, Avebury Church, Stonehenge, and the stone circle of Winterbourne Abbas. The Roman road that leads between Marlborough and Bath runs directly up to and around Silbury. It is possible that the Romans were aware of the ley line when planning their road. The author John Mitchel has written:
“If we recall that there are smilar hills in China sitting on the lung-mei, the Dragon Path, we have some basis for proposing that Silbury was laid out atop the Dragon line by pre-Celtic Druids with help of geomantic compasses. It stands to reason that the Chinese lung-mei extends over the entire globe.”
HEALING POWER AND THE ENERGY FILED AROUND SILBURY
It is said that the energy fields around Silbury have the power to heal. Diviners have determined that they ley line upon which the hill is isted possesses feminine attributes, and that earthsine is fequently observed nearby. Crop circles are also found relatively often int he surrounding fields. Unsurprisingly, UFO researchers see evidence of alien activities here.
Many ears will pass before all of the secrets of Silbury and its neighboring sites are brought to light. Since the 1980s, scientists and spiritualists have been working together using archaeology and intuition to solve the riddles of this mysterious place.
