Moon and Stars

Some stars like `Arudra’ and ` Mahakaya’ are bigger than the sun. But, they are far away from the earth.

What can we see in the sky during night time?

We see the moon and the stars in the sky during night.

The light emitted by the moon is called the “moonlight’’.

It is cool because the moon is not a self-luminous body.

The sunlight that falls on the moon reaches the earth as moonlight.

The shape of the moon is not same on all the days.

We cannot see it on some days. Sometimes we can see full-moon.

Sometimes it looks in crescent shape.

On some days, we can see it moon after the sunset.

Sometimes we see it in the mid-night.

This is because; the moon takes one month to revolve round the earth. So, these are called `lunar changes’.

On poornima, there will be a full-moon and gives us bright light. After that, it decrease in size day by day, for 15 days and disappears completely. It is called “Amavasya’’. The moon changes its shape on every fortnight from no-moon to full-moon and full-moon to no-moon and so on. The day on which we can see the full-moon is called “full-moon day’’. The day on which we cannot see the moon is called “no-moon’’.

In some aspects, the moon is similar to the earth.

When the Americans landed on the moon with the help of rockets, they found only mountains and valleys on the moon. But there are no living creatures like plants, animals, Human beings, etc. on the moon. The Indians, too, landed on the moon.

We see uncountable stars along with the moon in the sky during the nights. Some of them are bright and some are pale. Stars are self-luminous like the sun. They are bigger than the moon and the earth. Some stars like `Arudra’ and ` Mahakaya’ are bigger than the sun. But, they are far away from the earth. So, they look very small. Stars appear very bright on no-moon day because there will not be moonlight on no-moon day.

Some stars are named as `Aswani’, `Bharani’, and Kruttika’, etc. the big star that twinkles in the north is called the `Pole star
