Mars is the fourth planet from the sun in the solar system in the milky way galaxy. The planet was named after the roman god of war Mars. Sometimes Mars is often refereed to as the red planet. Mars has a very thin atmosphere. It has alot of features such as craters created by asteroids impacting the planet, valleys, deserts and even volcanoes. Also, there is evidence that water may have one day flowed on Mars.
Until the first observation of Mars by space object Mariner in 1965, many people had believe that Mars was a planet with water flow because of the light-dark patches that appear on the planet. The Pheonix Mars Lander directly sampled water ice in some martian soil on July 31 2008.
Mars has at least 2 moons, Phobos and Deimos. These moons are very small and irregularly shaped. Alot of scientists may believe that Phobos and Deimos are asteroids captured in Mars’ orbit from the Asteroid belt.
Google Earth also has an additon called “Google Mars” Which is the same as google earth but just exploring Mars. All you have to do is download the latest version of Google Earth and click the planet logo and click “Mars” there you can explore many cool locations such as Olympus Mons, the highest mountian known to man.
