How to See The Orionoid Meteor Shower 2009
Ideal conditions to see the Orionoid meteor shower in October 2009. How to see the meteors, where to see the meteors and when to see the meteors.
What is it:
When the Earth travels through the dust released by Halley’s Comet. Bits of the dust vaporize in the earth’s upper atmosphere we see “shooting stars”. This particular shower is called Orionoid because the shower appears to radiate from the middle of the Orion star constellation.
When:
The Orionoid meteor shower, October 2009:
Will take place from15th – 29th October with the peek being 21 -23 October 2009.
At 4:00 am daylight saving time (3:00 am non-daylight saving).
Very best time will be the morning of 22nd at 4 – 5 am.
Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia best times are 3 -5 am daylight saving time.

How many meteors:
In the Northern hemisphere the maximum meteors will be approximately 20 per hour, in the Southern Hemisphere maximum will be 40 meteors an hour.
Ideal viewing conditions:
The amount of meteors varies from year to year so it can’t be predicted.
Best seen in a clear sky with no clouds.
Ideally a dark sky, away from artificial city lights and light pollution.
Start watching at about 1am until dawn. 6am ET, 3am PT.
Watch a wide area of the sky. When you see a meteor trace it back to the Orion constellation and you will have found it.
You can see them with the naked eye, no need for a telescope.
