Going Round and Round
The moon is slowly moving away from the earth. As the moon orbits the earth, its gravity pulls on the earth’s oceans, which causes tides. The tides actually “pull forward” on the moon, causing the moon to gradually spiral outward.

Earth constantly revolves around the Sun, while the Moon constantly revolves round the Earth. Simultaneously, the Sun, the Earth and the Moon are constantly spinning on their axes.
Have you ever wondered why does a year comprise of 365 days only? The reason is that the Earth takes 365 days to complete one revolution around the Sun.
All heavenly bodies like stars, planets and galaxies spin on their own axis too.
The Sun takes 27 days to rotate once on its axis. The Earth takes 24 hours to complete one rotation. This is the reason why a day consists of 24 hours.
The Moon takes 27.3 days to orbit once around the Earth. It takes the same amount of time to complete a rotation on its own axis. Due to this we get to see the same face of the Moon.
