Originally formed in London in 1971 and topping charts throughout the 70’s and 80’s, who else could represent British music in the 70’s other than Queen?
Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor, the men who joined together to form this iconic group, released 18 number one albums, 18 number one singles and 10 number one DVD’s- an unbelievable feat! Influenced by other British acts such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and David Bowie, Queen have gone on to influence generations.
However it wasn’t just the music that made Queen so infamous, Freddie Mercury’s flamboyant stage persona, and his theatrical style made his a true performer as well as a musician. The Death of Mercury due to complications caused by HIV meant the band were surrounded by scandal and gossip for the final years of Mercury’s life. Mercury also helped the band as an artist, he designed the Queen logo which combines the zodiac signs of the four members ( the two lions represent the Leo’s Deacon and Taylor, the Crab represents May and Cancer and two fairies depict Mercurys own star sign of Virgo).
My personal favourite tracks have to be ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and the hit ‘Under Pressure’ with David Bowie but there are so many tracks to choose from. Growing up in the 90’s, ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ was the constant soundtrack to my Saturday nights, watching Gladiators and everyone loves the powerful ballad ‘We are the Champions’.
