Let us continue our journey through space and discover more of our planets and their interesting facts. Today, let us see the interesting facts about Venus. We have already completed Mercury and Mars. The links are below if you are interested to read the articles!

  1. Venus and Earth are so similar. Did you know that Venus and Earth are like two twins! The size is nearly the same with Venus only being around 600-700km less than that of the Earths. They both orbit the sun in similar ways as well while the mass of Venus is only 80% the mass of Earth. However, despite these similarities, there is no chance of life here as there is on Earth. The atmosphere is mainly carbon dioxide with temperatures rising to an unbearable 460c. This is so much hotter than the temperatures faced in planet Mercury which is closer to the sun itself. Adding to this, the pressure on Venus is so intense that it would crush you if you were to walk on the surface of Venus. The pressure is around 90 times greater than the pressure of Earth and it’s near enough the same as going 1km under the ocean.
  2. Venus is bright in the sky. Did you know that Venus shines so much brighter in the sky than some of the stars you see at night! It can be so bright that it casts shadows! To see this for yourself, I recommend you go out in the darkest places where the moon is not visible!
  3. It rains on planet Venus! This is definitely another similarity of our planet. But of course, planet Venus is the evil twin and yes it does rain! But this rain is not the type we would expect. Above the skies of Venus, heavy sulphur dioxide clouds rain down sulphuric acid. We know that Earth has one of these days where acid rain is a problem. But on Venus, it’s more acidic and it’s even deadlier.
  4. Venus rotates in a clockwise direction. The rotation of Venus is very slow. It is so slow that on Earth, our day lasts 24 hours while on Venus, a day there actually lasts 243 Earth days. It also seems very strange that this is the only planet in the solar system that rotates in a clockwise direction while all the other planets in our solar system including Earth, rotates anti-clockwise.
  5. Very few impact craters. The planet Venus has very few impact craters on its surface due to the volcanic activity that regularly flows across the planet. Any impacts made over several millions of years would have disappeared under the hot magma.

Conclusion

I hope you have enjoyed the facts about Venus. Hopefully, when more satellites visit the planet, we will find out more facts that are yet to be discovered.
