Billionaires Mine Asteroids?
That’s right!
Billionaires are getting together to help Planetary Resources mine asteroids! (helping as in, giving them huge money donations!)
This my friends is the future of Resource Development!
(how exciting is that).
Mining for precious metals and resources is about to happen somewhere highly unexpected. Space.
Today the world is facing a minor (or you can say major) problem. The energy that is here on earth, is running out. So what better way to fix it, right? It’s funny how something that is so threatening to the earth, may actually save us all. These asteroids are absolutely amazing and may allow us to gain energy back where it is majorly needed.
Thanks to the idea of mining asteroids, the near-earth asteroids that were so intimidating yet harmless are gaining more attention than ever before.
You may be asking yourself, how? How will something like this be done? Where is the money going to come from? Let’s just say not every billionaire out there is as greedy as the media makes them seem. They are actually the ones who are making this all possible. They are taking matters into their own hands! By getting together and combining their money, mining asteroids is going to happen. May I add with no government or political help (figures). That’s a good thing though, because there are no restrictions now.
The company that plans to make this happen and that is being funding by these billionaires is called Planetary Resources.
They are the ones who will be mining NEA’s !
They are the ones who came up with this brilliant idea!
Now let me take a moment to give a shout out to the people who are backing them up.
- Google executives Larry Page + Eric Schmidt
- Director James Cameron
- Billionaire Ross Perot
- Peter H. Diamandis
- Microsoft’s Charles Simonyi
With the help of these people, Planetary Resources can go beyond what restricted agencies and their politically driven agendas were able to do. Basically meaning, Planetary Resources will be able to do things that NASA could only dream about doing.
So What Are They Looking For?
The company will be searching for two main things on these asteroids.
Water and Precious metals.
Metals including platinum and palladium.
These major things may allow for trillions of dollars to be added to the GDP. (how nice is that?)
Since precious metals like gold and platinum can sell for $50,000 per kilogram. A small asteroid alone can be worth……………$30 billion dollars.
Try to imagine what it would be like to have infinite quantities of energy, metals, minerals and water. This is all made possible with mining NEA’s.
Almost too good to be true right?
Other benefits
According to Martin Elvis, whom is an astrophysicist, he points out that there are two other main outcomes that would result in mining steroids.
The first outcome would be the discovery of exotic new cosmic material, which would also allow cheaper space missions. The water found on these asteroids would be able to be broken down and formed into hydrogen. This would then be used as fuel and oxygen, which would extend future space travel! (just what we needed). Luckily, asteroids will also take less fuel to land on due to their low gravitational pull. (could get used to that!).
The second outcome is what the asteroid material may reveal about the earth. It could possibly reveal why there are ores in the earth’s crust. Also, if the oceans came from asteroids and comets that previously had contact with our planet.
So many benefits either way you look at it!
How It All Started and How It Will Continue
Back in late April is when the company told the public about their plans. The co-founder Eric Anderson shared that the idea would start out small at first. Meaning they will search for asteroids using the telescope in Earth’s orbit. When searching for these asteroids, they will try to find the ones with the best mix of minerals. The launch of this idea is expected to occur anywhere from 18 months to 2 years.
As soon as the company had made this announcement, they had received thousands of job applications. All were mostly engineers who wanted to help design and build the asteroid-mining robotic probes (the things that will make this all possible).
The Planetary Resources are working to redefine the way the world views….natural resources.
And may they be successful!
