About Mars Planet

The temperature on Mars can be very, very cold. On its warmest day, Mars can still be a very cold place. At the top and bottom of the planet are poles just like on Earth. During the Martian winter, ice caps can be seen at the poles.

Mars —- the red planet of our Solar System—- has an iron-rich surface. This gives the planet a reddish hue. The planet has man Earth-like features, like polar caps and water carved valleys. That is why early astronomers always thought that the planet had life.

The surface of Mars is covered with extinct volcanoes. One of these, Olympus Mons, is the tallest mountain in the Solar System. Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos. They are small and not more than 30 km in length. Both are irregular-shaped and believed to be asteroids captured by the gravity of Mars.

Mars has water vapor only in the lowest part of the atmosphere in the form of clouds or fog along the surface.

The aerial view of Mars taken by Viking-2 shows the deserted region with the orange tinge. The Olympus Mons mountain and craters are clearly visible.
