About Jupiter Planet

Jupiter is the fifth planet from our Sun. The planet Jupiter is named for the king of ancient Roman gods. It is the biggest planet in our solar system.

Jupiter is the biggest planet in the Solar System, so huge that 1,300 Earths could fit inside it! The planet has small rocky core. The mantle is made up of compressed liquefied hydrogen and helium gases Jupiter’s atmosphere is made up of multi-colored gases which swirl at the rate of up to 650 km per hour. The planet has 16 moons. Four of them are bigger than Pluto. The four moons —- Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto — were discovered by Galileo in 1610.

Jupiter takes just under ten hours to rotate once on its axis. This causes winds to whip up at high speeds. As the gases in the atmosphere circle the planet, they produce colorful belts and zones in the cloud tops. Even giant storms are created. The Great Red Spot (right), more than twice the size of Earth, is the biggest hurricane in the Solar System.

Galilean moons – Europa is covered with an ice pack.

Callisto’s surface is pitted with craters made by meteors.

Ganymede is the largest moon in the Solar System.

Io is strewn with active volcanoes, some spew volcanic sulfur up to 300 km into space.
