Many have begun to inquire into the meaning of the end of the Mayan calendar. Some fear it is also the end of the world as we know it. Some question whether they will ever see their children mature.

The Mayan Indian Elder insists that it is definitely not the end of the world, but simple the end of a really old calendar.

The idea of the end of the world is not a Mayan one. It is actually a modern day western thinking. “For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle” says Sandra Noble, but it is “a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in” with the idea of a December 21 2012 apocalypse.

Researchers have investigated the date 12/21/2012 and have discovered that a winter solstice will occur. At that point the sun will align with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years. The sun will block “whatever energy typically streams to Earth from the center of the Milky Way will indeed be disrupted on 12/21/2012 at 11:11pm. Universal Time,” Joseph writes.

However, it is unlikely that ancient Mayan elders would have had knowledge about this winter solstice.

An expert anthropologist Susan Gillespie says that the 2012 phenomenon derives “from media and from other people making use of the Maya past to fulfill agendas that are really their own”
